Spring Valley
Spring Valley, Texas began as one of the six Memorial Villages. Those villages—Bunker Hill, Hedwig, Hilshire Village, Hunters Creek, Piney Point and Spring Valley—were established in the 1950s as an alternative to living in Central Houston. The original residents were wealthy executives who preferred a more rural lifestyle to the hustle and bustle of the city. The culture created by those early villagers remains alive today. Combined, the remaining villages have higher-than-average household incomes. Properties are large, and homes are often secluded from the street by trees or long, winding driveways. And still today, Spring Valley, Hilshire Village and their neighbors seem to be shaded from the nearby metropolis by huge pine trees and gentle landscapes.

Spring Valley Village requested incorporation in 1954. A vote was held the following year, which passed by a narrow margin. The incorporation became official in 1955 and a Spring Valley Zoning Commission was established shortly thereafter. Due to the village’s heavily treed landscape and lack of city services at the time, most of the land was zoned for single-story, single-family housing. Not until 1981 did the Zoning Commission allow for the construction of multi-story homes. A little under than 3,700 people reside in Spring Valley and approximately 720 live in Hilshire Village. Both Spring Valley and Hilshire Village are patrolled by the Spring Valley Police Department making this a happy and safe environment to live in.

While Spring Valley, Texas retains its country atmosphere today, residents are not without nearby amenities. Shopping is provided by the Memorial City Mall, which contains national chain stores and restaurants, plus an ice rink, movie theater and carousel. Medical needs are served by the Spring Branch Medical Center located on Long Point Road. With Central Houston just 10 miles away, Spring Valley residents have access to many recreational, cultural, economic and educational opportunities.

The quality of public education in Spring Valley is a selling point for the community. And families are pleased to learn that the educational opportunities don’t end with high school graduation. Community colleges, public and private universities and vocational schools are available within driving distance. Notable examples include the campuses of the Houston Community College District, the University of Texas Health Science Center, Rice University and Houston Baptist University.
